DEEP CLEANING V/S REGULAR CLEANING Regular cleaning is a necessary procedure which is required to maintain dental hygiene and health. It not only keeps your teeth esthetically appealing but also keeps your overall dental health clean and healthy. When your teeth are not cleaned regularly it becomes susceptible to infection and may lead to tooth loss. DIFFERENCE BETWEEN REGULAR AND DEEP CLEANING A regular cleaning focuses on areas above the gum line and polishing the outer surface of the teeth Deep Cleaning focuses more on removing bacterial colonies and infection and tartar from the root of the teeth. WHAT DOES DEEP CLEANING INVOLVE? It involves cleaning in between teeth and gums till the root below the gumline Deep cleaning involves Scaling as well as root planning. It is mostly recommended for patients with extreme tartar build-up in the exterior and the roots. Scaling involves removing tartar beneath the gum line using an ultrasonic scaler. Root planning is repeated rubbing motion applied on roots to remove rough spots that promote gum infection by trapping and harboring bacteria. It's critical to maintain healthy gums and encourage the reattachment of healthy gums to teeth. IS DEEP CLEANING NECESSARY? Deep cleaning is not necessarily advised for everyone. If the infection cannot be controlled by regular cleaning, your dentist will advise you to deep clean. Deep cleaning is advised - If you have red and swollen gums - Bleeding while brushing and pus in the gums - Loose teeth - If stubborn tartar cannot be removed by regular cleaning - When there is a gum pocket ( i.e space between teeth and gums) is more than 5mm, then there are high chance of periodontal diseases - If you have Gingivitis and Periodontitis. DEEP CLEANING PROCEDURE. Periodontal Probing - One of the first few steps in deep cleaning is measuring the depth of gum pockets. Scaling - These gum pockets will be cleaned using an ultrasonic scaler Root planning - Once all the tartar is removed, root planning is done. Root surfaces are smoothened out to reduce bacteria harboring. Polishing and Flossing- Once the cleaning and planning are done, the Polishing of the outer and inner surface of the teeth with help of polishing paste is done. WHAT TO EXPECT? Some people may experience pain and discomfort while cleaning gum sockets which is bearable If the patient is very much uncomfortable, the dentist may use local anesthesia to ease the pain. There may be little soreness and sensitivity after the cleaning is done. There may be bleeding after brushing for 1-2 days which is normal. Avoid hot fluids and foods for two days. Acidic food can cause discomfort and worsen sensitivity and soreness.
